Lesson 1

Harmonized Scales

Ever wanted to make a chord progression, but don't know how and where to start ? The Harmonized Major Scale is the place to start.

C Major Scale

C          D          E          F          G          A          B          C

1           2          3          4          5           6          7           8

If you stack up thirds on top of each note of the C major scale you will end up with a series of major, minor and diminished chords. E.g. (C-E-G will end up to form a C major triad, D-F-A it is a D minor triad and so on). As result of this action you get this :

CMaj          Dm            Em          FMaj          GMaj          Am          BDim          CMaj

I                 IIm           IIIm            IV                  V               VIm        VIIDim             I

Having this understood it is half way to make your own chord progressions. Let 's look at some of the most famous used in the Key of C :

  I - IV - V ------------------- C - F - G

  I - IV - V - IV - I ----------- C - F - G - F - C

  I - V - VIm - IV -----------  C - G - Am - F

  I - VIm - V - IV -----------  C - Am - G - F

  I - VIm - IIIm ------------- C - Am - Em

  I - VIm - IIm - V ---------- C - Am - Dm - G

  I - IIIm - IV - V ------------ C - Em - F - G

  I - IIIm - VIm - IV --------- C - Em - Am - F

  I - IIm - IIIm - IV - V ------ C - Dm - Em - F - V

  IV - V - I - VIm ------------ F - G - C - Am

Try now to harmonize the other eleven keys and transpose these chord progressions to the keys you are in.

Have fun !

Lesson 2

Now, if we stack up another note, a 3rd higher, on top of the existing ones,  we will end up with 7th chords :

CMaj7     Dm7     Em7     FMaj7     G7     Am7     Bm7b5    CMaj7

Notice that when harmonized as triads we have  three  chord types : Major, Minor and Diminished.

When we harmonized  to 7th chords we have four types of chords : Maj7, m7, 7, m7b5.

Let's look at some common progressions using 7ths chords in the key of C :

ii - V7 - I  ----------------------  Dm7 - G7 - Cmaj7

I - vi - ii - V7  -----------------   CMaj7 - Am7 - Dm7 - G7

I - V7 - i   ----------------------   Cmaj7 - G7 - Cmaj7

I - IV - V7 - I -------------------  Cmaj7 - Fmaj7 - G7 - Cmaj7

I - iii - vi - V7 ------------------  CMaj7 - Em7 - Am7 - G7

Try now to Harmonize the other eleven keys and learn this progressions in all  keys.

Have fun !!
